Have you ever had those moments when you know you’ve just stumbled upon something good, like really good? About six months ago, my husband and I stumbled upon a completely organic small grocery store, selling a wide range of produce and products. It’s one of my favorite stores in Penang!  Just Life Organic offers a wide range of products from baby food, cosmetics, vitamins, dried goods, fresh fruit, and veggies. We had been shopping there for months before we noticed  a basket of fresh bread from Simple Taste Artisan Bakery on the check-out counter.  And for good reason-the basket was always empty and the bread was sold out! Thankfully a few weeks ago, we were in the shop at just the right time to purchase some bread. Little did my husband and I know what we were getting into! Let’s just say, we’re addicted.

Meng Meng started Simple Taste back in 2009 after spending time working in a popular bakery in Kuala Lumpur. After a short time, she realized how commercialized the bread industry was and was dismayed at the amount of artificial ingredients and preservatives that went into the bread. She explains, ” I fed my family bread everyday and I couldn’t imagine the amount of chemicals and preservatives they were consuming.”  Meng Meng started doing research and realized how simply bread can be made using healthy ingredients. Hence the name, ‘Simple Taste’.  Meng Meng believes in simple, healthy, and delicious food. She says everyone should know what they are eating and what they are putting into their bodies.

Simple Taste Artisan Bakery offers completely organic baked goods. All of their breads, muffins, and cakes are handmade. They use no artificial additives or preservatives and no artificial flavoring. And the best part? Everything is 100% vegan! They never use eggs, butter, or cow’s milk.

Simple Taste Vegan Kaya Buns

I recently sampled a few of their most popular products: Deli-Rye, French Flaxseed, Chocolate Muffins, and Kaya Buns. Simple Taste’s Deli-Rye is perfect for a healthy sandwich for lunch! And their French Flax seed is hardy and delicious with a thick crust and would pair beautifully with a nice cup of soup. I love how they pack so many flaxseeds in! Their chocolate muffins are also quite tasty. My husband especially appreciates that they are not too sweet, just like a muffin should be.  Probably one of my all-time favorite indulgences from Simple Taste is their Kaya Buns with a rich and sweet filling. For those of you not familiar with Kaya, it is a popular treat here in Malaysia. It’s basically coconut jam! Not all Kaya is vegan friendly, some make it with chicken or duck eggs. However, with Simple Taste, you can trust that it’s vegan!

Simple Taste sells many more baked goods, like: Sourdough Bread, Cinnamon Sugar Rolls, Ciabatta Bread, French Baguettes, and Chocolate Cake. For a complete list of their products, check out their website HERE! All of my Malaysian and Ex-Pat friends, you gotta check these guys out :)

Simple Taste Artisan Bakery is located in Kuala Lumpar and it’s products can be ordered or purchased at any Just Life Organic shop. They hope to open their own shop in KL soon!

  1. That looks amazing! I am growing amazed that Malaysia is becoming vegan-friendly and organic-friendly despite the yummy vegetarian buffets out there. Thanks for sharing! Btw, I added you in my Fabulous links! :)
